Last updated: 11/02/2006
Please complete the form below to calculate your BMI. It should be mentioned that although BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, it may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. It may underestimate body fat in elderly persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
What is BMI
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a ratio between weight and height. It is a mathematical formula that correlates with body fat, used to evaluate if a person is at an unhealthy weight. The BMI is one factor that can be taken into account when assessing risk of developing diseases and disorders due to obesity, such as:
- Cardiovascular disease
- High blood pressure
- Osteoarthritis
- Some cancers
- Diabetes
BMI is only one of many factors used to predict risk for disease. It is important to remember that weight is only one factor that is related to disease.
