MU Sports Medicine Hall of Fame to induct three members at annual dinner banquet

Three new members of the Marshall University Sports Medicine Hall of Fame will be inducted Feb. 28 during a dinner banquet on campus. The inductees, team physicians Warren Mitchel "Mitch" Shaver, MD, and Robert W. Lowe, MD; and former head athletic trainer, Jeffrey R. Carrico, will also be recognized later in the evening during halftime of the Marshall University men's basketball game against UCF at 7 p.m.
The dinner, sponsored by Cabell Huntington Hospital, will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the John Marshall Room of the Marshall University Memorial Student Center. Tickets are $25 per person and are available through the Marshall University Athletic Ticket office by calling 304-696-HERD or 1-800-THEHERD.
For the first time, the Dr. Jose Ricard Student Athlete Scholarship will be announced at the banquet. The Sports Medicine Hall of Fame became a reality in 2000 because of the vision and passion of Dr. Ricard. This year's induction is in his memory. Dr. Ricard passed away July 5, 2008.

Jeffrey R. Carrico, MS Ed., ATC
Jeffrey R. Carrico, MS Ed., ATC, first came to Marshall University in 1997 as assistant athletic trainer and was named head athletic trainer in 1999. He remained in that position until August 2007. While a member of the Thundering Herd staff, Mr. Carrico had daily involvement in the medical care of Marshall University's men's basketball and baseball teams. Also during his time in Huntington, Mr. Carrico regularly assisted with the medical care of athletes on the football, men's soccer, men's cross country, men's golf and cheerleading teams. He earned his master of science in education with an emphasis in sports management from Northern Illinois University and his bachelor of science with an emphasis in secondary education and athletic training with a school health minor from Eastern Kentucky University.
Robert W. Lowe, MD
Robert W. Lowe, MD, was a team physician for Marshall University beginning in 1971 and into the 1990s. Dr. Lowe began his work with the Young Thundering Herd as a team physician with Dr. Jim Heckman and Dr. Colin Craythorne. Dr. Lowe cared for athletes at home and away Thundering Herd football games and basketball games as a member of the Scott Orthopedic Center, where he remains today. Dr. Lowe is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned his medical degree at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and serves as president of the Tri-State Orthopedic Society.
Warren Mitchel "Mitch" Shaver, MD
Warren Mitchel "Mitch" Shaver, MD, first came to Marshall University in 1977 as a freshman and has remained with the university ever since. Dr. Shaver is a life-long resident of Cabell County and received his undergraduate, graduate and medical degrees from Marshall University, and he completed his Family Practice Residency at Marshall in June 1993. He joined the faculty of the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in July 1993. During the 1996-97 season, he had the privilege of assisting Dr. Jose Ricard as Marshall's men's basketball primary care team physician and has continued in this role ever since. Dr. Shaver is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and received his Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine in 1999. He is a professor in the Department of Family and Community Health at Marshall University and serves as director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. In addition to his duties at Marshall University, Dr. Shaver has provided sideline medical coverage for Cabell Midland High School football since 1994.
