May has been designated by the American Academy of Dermatology as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It accounted for nearly 60,000 of new skin cancer cases in the United States in 2007 and 75 percent of skin cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. Advanced melanoma spreads to internal organs and may result in death. If detected in the early stages, melanoma usually can be treated successfully.
Melanoma is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing tanning cells. Melanomas may appear suddenly without warning, but also can develop from or near a mole. They are found most frequently on the upper backs of men and women or on the legs of women, but can occur anywhere on the body.
