Dr. Hoyt J. Burdick
Cabell Huntington's Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hoyt J. Burdick, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), a national organization consisting of more than 10,000 physician leaders. The election process began as an invitation from the nominating committee based upon Dr. Burdick's career achievements and his participation in the ACPE. Of nine nominees to the Board, six advanced through online voting to make presentations from the floor of the national meeting. Burdick and two other physician executives were recently elected at the Chicago meeting to serve a three-year term. The leadership role includes strategic and curriculum planning for the 30-year old organization whose members range from physicians beginning their first medical staff leadership position to physician CEOs of international healthcare organizations.
Dr. Burdick earned his Master's in Medical Management in 1998 through an advanced educational program sponsored by the ACPE and Tulane University. Burdick has been a diplomate of the ACPE since 1997, an ACPE fellow since 1999 and a Certified Physician Executive since 2000.
"Medical Management is where the knowledge and experience of medical school intersect with the business skills of complex healthcare administration," said Dr. Burdick. "A safe and high-quality patient experience depends upon both. The ACPE motto is 'Inspiring Physician Leaders – Improving Health.' Serving on the Board of ACPE allows me to be involved at the leading edge of medical management and contribute to the development of future physician executives."
Dr. Burdick serves as Vice President for Medical Affairs (CMO) at Cabell Huntington Hospital, a position in which he has served for more than 15 years. He is only the third physician to hold this office more than 53 years since the hospital opened. Dr. Burdick is currently responsible for supervising activities in quality and resource management, infection control, performance improvement, survey readiness, medical and dental staff, medical informatics, medical directorships and graduate medical education.
