Cabell Huntington Hospital Family Medical Center physicians Dr. Gary Cremeans and Dr. Glenn Harper have been honored by the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine with the 2009 Outstanding Rural Clinician and Medical Educator Award. Drs. Cremeans and Harper are family medicine physicians at the Cabell Huntington Hospital Family Medical Center in Kenova, where last year they hosted 18 Marshall University medical students for rotations that allowed the student physicians to "refine their skills and experience the rewards and challenges of rural practice," Jo Ann Raines, senior program coordinator and assistant dean for rural programs for the medical school, said in a news release.

"Drs. Cremeans and Harper offer a unique learning opportunity for student doctors to see how the primary care medicine they are taught in the classroom translates to caring for patients in a private practice setting," said Hoyt Burdick, MD, vice president and chief medical officer at Cabell Huntington Hospital. "The Family Medical Center practice serves as a model of efficiency, quality and service. This award recognizes not only the role of Drs. Cremeans and Harper as outstanding rural clinicians, but also recognizes the students' appreciation for the educational value of the time they spent working alongside these excellent physicians."

The awards were presented May 7 and Raines quoted graduating medical students who described the pair as "awesome faculty members" and "very attentive to the learning of students." The annual award recognizes the teaching contributions of outlying physicians who allow medical students to do a block of their training in the physicians' offices.
