Surgeon and gynecologist Brenda Dawley, MD, is offering patients a minimally invasive, robotic hysterectomy option at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Dr. Dawley, an experienced gynecologist with the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, is one of three surgeons in West Virginia -- and the only surgeon in Huntington -- with significant experience offering this option. A hysterectomy using the daVinci Surgical System provides patients with several benefits over traditional surgeries that include less blood loss, minimal pain, less scarring and shorter hospital stays. It is also proven to be effective for patients who are obese or who have a history of previous surgeries such as Cesarean sections.

"Using the daVinci Surgical System compared to previous methods is like going from black and white television to color," Dr. Dawley said. "The visualization is so much better and we have had good experiences from patients who report less pain."

Dawley said she also uses the surgical robot, previously only used at CHH for prostate surgery, for other gynecologic procedures including tubal reversals and myomectomies.
