Cabell Huntington Hospital has been honored with both state and national awards for supporting organ donation. The hospital received a Medal of Honor from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the fourth year in a row and a West Virginia Governor's Award for the second year in a row.

Both honors were awarded at recent conferences and demonstrate Cabell Huntington Hospital's continued support for organ donation. Members of the hospital's administration, medical staff and Intensive Care Unit were presented with the awards by Teresa Burns with the Kentucky/West Virginia Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA).

"Patients, even those who receive traumatic life-ending injuries, receive such excellent care at Cabell Huntington Hospital that they are still able to become donors," Burns said. "These honors are very prestigious and illustrate the wonderful work and support from Cabell Huntington Hospital."

There are more than 104,000 people currently waiting on the organ donor list, and 16 people die each day waiting for an organ, Burns said.

"As many as eight lives can be saved with every one donor," Burns said.

KODA, the organ procurement organization for the area, partners with Cabell Huntington Hospital to save lives through organ and tissue donation.
