Cabell Huntington Hospital Presents $84,000 Check to United Way

Brent Marsteller, Cabell Huntington Hospital's president and CEO, recently presented a check for $84,138.74 to Laura Gilliam, executive director of United Way of the River Cities. The check represents the combined donation from the hospital and pledges made by hospital employees during the recently completed annual campaign.
"I am proud to present this check on behalf of the employees and physicians of Cabell Huntington Hospital to the United Way today," Marsteller said. "To my knowledge, this is the highest amount ever raised at Cabell Huntington Hospital, and I think it demonstrates the commitment the hospital and its employees have to this community."
The amount is the highest combined employee and corporate pledge for this year's campaign, according to Gilliam. The hospital's internal campaign chairman, Gigi Gerlach, said the hospital team conducted a 30-day campaign that was focused as much on awareness as it was on fund raising.
Gerlach said, "We held our most successful campaign this year and what a ride! We held raffles, bake sales, instituted employee blue jean days, had a pumpkin-carving contest, sponsored a donkey basketball game, and conducted a food drive for the Food Bank and a cell phone drive for Branches. Everyone was involved in some way. By October 31st, everyone knew about The United Way. The administration here at Cabell is very supportive of all of our campaign endeavors every year and that means everything for a successful campaign."
The largest portion of the donation is from employee and physician pledges, but Cabell Huntington Hospital has long provided corporate support for the United Way. This year, Monte Ward, senior vice president and chief financial officer for the hospital, was the United Way of the River Cities' campaign chairman.
"We are very grateful to Monte for his leadership of the campaign this year," Gilliam said. "He was so enthusiastic and so committed to the success of the campaign, he was willing to do just about anything. He not only agreed to sit in a dunking booth at our kick-off event, he did it in his suit!"
