Lab Director Tom Lightner met with Pediatrics Nurse Manager Paula Walters to present her with DVDs and PlayStation games for her unit. The gifts were purchased with money raised by Laboratory employees during National Laboratory Week.

Cabell Huntington Hospital is making hospital stays for young patients a little more comfortable with the addition of Sony PlayStation 2 game systems and flat screen televisions for games and movies in each room on the 5th Floor Pediatrics Unit. The 17 game systems, which were installed recently, include wireless controllers and access to a variety of video games for patients to play.

"Video games are the primary entertainment kids enjoy these days, and it is still what most kids of varying ages can enjoy," said Paula Walters, RN, Pediatrics nurse manager. "It is the one thing we can offer a child age 3 years or 18 years."

The video game systems, which were purchased by the hospital, should make the stay for sick children a little more enjoyable because they can pass their time in the hospital by enjoying an activity many would at home. Before, the hospital had a few game systems the unit had to share. Walters said the demand for the shared systems was high.

Walters said anyone can donate games for patients to use if they are rated "E" for everyone or "T" for teens.

"Video games are really the ideal thing to give pediatric patients some activity to occupy their time while they are in the hospital," she said.
