Second Grandparenting Central Class Takes Place Saturday, October 13
Last updated: 10/09/2007
Cabell Huntington Hospital is offering its second class in the Grandparenting Central series on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Harless Auditorium on the hospital's campus. The class will feature R. B. Bookwalter, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Marshall University, who will discuss communication skills for grandparents.
The focus of this session is on developing the legacy that grandparents pass on to their grandchildren. "Legacy has a number of meanings when applied to the relationship between a grandparent and his or her grandchild," said Michele Conley, executive director of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation and organizer of the Grandparenting Central series. "The purpose of this class is to help grandparents identify what they want their legacy to be for their grandchildren, whether that be an appreciation for art or music or a skill that has been passed on from generation to generation, and how they might share that legacy with their grandchildren."
"Story telling is a wonderful way for grandparents to pass on information and life experiences to grandchildren," Bookwalter said. "Story telling that creates a legacy is more than telling tales of walking to school, up hill, both ways – it is a method of connecting with grandchildren that applies life experience in a way that's meaningful to them."
The session will also discuss grandparenting at a distance and will offer ways to keep in touch with grandchildren who live far away. "There are a number of ways to communicate technologically today that can help people create bonds even when you can't communicate face-to-face with grandchildren who live far away," Bookwalter said.
Grandparenting Central is free to area grandparents and will cover a wide variety of social and educational topics. There will be a light supper served during the break. To register, please call (304) 526-2501.
