Because West Virginians are among the least likely to get regular colorectal cancer screenings compared to the rest of the country, a colorectal cancer screening awareness event is set for March 15 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Huntington Mall near the food court. Sponsored by Cabell Huntington Hospital, the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, the American Cancer Society and WV Mountains of Hope, this event will provide information about the importance of colorectal cancer screenings. Wade Douglas, MD; Waseem Shora, MD and Gerald McKinney, MD, will be among the medical professionals on hand to answer questions and provide information to potential patients.

A free colorectal cancer screening kit will be mailed to people who stop by the booth and call a special colorectal cancer screening phone number. The kit will include everything necessary to conduct the first steps of a colorectal cancer screening at home.

Douglas, a surgical oncologist at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, said the event will educate people in Cabell County and surrounding areas on the importance of screenings.

"Our mission is to raise awareness of the need for regular screenings and to improve the rate of screenings," Douglas said.
