Fellowship-trained hand surgeon joins Cabell Huntington Hospital Medical Staff

Alan R. Koester, MD, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic hand surgeon, has joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Cabell Huntington Hospital’s Medical and Dental Staff to offer patients specialized care for hands and upper extremities.
Dr. Koester is fellowship-trained in hand and microsurgery and board certified in both orthopaedics and hand surgery. He specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery and microvascular procedures including tendon, artery and nerve repair. He also performs reconstructive surgeries on soft tissue and joint replacements for hands, elbows and shoulders.
"Dr. Koester adds a new component to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Marshall University and to the orthopaedic services at Cabell Huntington Hospital," said Dr. Ali Oliashirazi, professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Director of the Mary H. Hodges Joint Replacement Program at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
"Bringing Dr. Koester to Huntington, we have added an experienced surgeon who will help fill the needs of patients with hand and upper extremity problems," Oliashirazi said. "We are excited to add hand surgery to our comprehensive orthopaedic services."
Dr. Koester earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University and has completed a general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the same school. Dr. Koester completed fellowships in hand surgery and microsurgery at the University of New Mexico.
