Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center hosts skin cancer screening event

A free skin cancer screening clinic will take place May 3 at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center on the campus of Cabell Huntington Hospital. The event, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free and is open to the public. Appointments may also be made, but walk-ins are welcome. Area physicians and dermatologists have volunteered their time to conduct screenings for this event.
Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing tanning cells. Melanomas may appear suddenly without warning, but also can develop from or near a mole. They are found most frequently on the upper backs of men and women or on the legs of women, but can occur anywhere on the body.
The overall incidence of melanoma is rising at an alarming rate. In 2005, one in 62 Americans has a lifetime risk of developing invasive melanoma. Nearly 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths are from melanoma.
