Cabell Huntington Hospital’s Senior Services Department invites anyone affected by Alzheimer’s as a patient, caregiver or family member, to participate in a monthly support group focused on coping with the disease. The August meeting will take place Tuesday, August 9 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Resource Room of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center on the Cabell Huntington Hospital campus. The meeting location is just inside the front entrance of the Cancer Center.

Facilitators Joy Pelfrey, Director of the Senior Services Department at Cabell Huntington Hospital, and Teresa Sexton, Senior Services Clinical Manager, will lead a discussion about making your home safe for someone living with Alzheimer’s.

"A person with Alzheimer’s may not be able to take responsibility for his or her own safety," Pelfrey said. "Families and caregivers often need to make changes in the home environment to insure the safety of even a mildly impaired person. There are many tips someone can learn to assist them in ‘Alzheimer-proofing’ their home. Additionally, a support group will allow people familiar with the impact of Alzheimer’s to share what they have found to be successful for them."

Pelfrey also said that many situations in the home environment can lead to potential harm, and it is important to take special precautions to guard against accidents. For more information about this support group meeting or other groups sponsored by Cabell Huntington Hospital Senior Services, please call 304-526-2695.
