Gerard Oakley, MD, a longtime cancer specialist and Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, has been named medical director of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center (ECCC) at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Dr. Oakley is one of the founding physicians of the ECCC, and he has been caring for patients there since it opened in 2006. In his new role, he will oversee clinical operations for surgical oncology, pediatric oncology, gynecologic oncology, medical oncology and radiation oncology. He will also continue to see patients in his clinic and perform surgical procedures.
"We realize the great responsibility our patients have entrusted us with, and this is an opportunity to provide for them the best that medicine has to offer in their community, and in a warm and welcoming environment," Dr. Oakley said. "Our goal is to treat every patient as we would want to be treated ourselves; our dream is to deliver successful treatment to all of our patients."
During his career, Dr. Oakley has held numerous hospital and academic leadership positions, including Professor and Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine; Chair of the Oncology Committee at Cabell Huntington Hospital and President of the Medical Staff at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Dr. Oakley earned his medical degree at the University of Michigan, and he completed his fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at the University of Minnesota. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
As the region’s most comprehensive cancer center, the ECCC’s services include radiation oncology, surgical oncology, medical oncology and hematology, orthopedic oncology, pediatric oncology, gynecologic oncology, surgical breast oncology, clinical trials and cancer research― all located on the campus of Cabell Huntington Hospital and the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.
