Smoking is responsible for more than one out of every five deaths in the US
Smoking is the chief avoidable cause of death in the United States. According to the 1994 U.S. Surgeon General's Report, more than 400,000 deaths annually are attributed to smoking-related diseases such as coronary artery disease, lung cancer and emphysema. Smoking is responsible for more than one out of every five deaths in this country and is the single most preventable cause of death in our society.
More than 40 million Americans have quit smoking since 1964. In addition, most surveys show that 9 out of 10 smokers say they want to quit. Still, quitting is not an easy task. Two out of every five smokers will make three or more attempts to quit before succeeding. What makes quitting so difficult? Nicotine addiction is the problem, and it is no surprise that nicotine is 6 to 10 times more addictive than heroin. Unfortunately, many smokers don't realize they are addicted and feel a constant frustration during their repeated attempts to quit.
Cabell Huntington Hospital offers Freedom From Smoking®, the smoking cessation program endorsed by the American Lung Association. To learn more about the program, please call (304) 696-2935.
