HealthNet Aeromedical Services

When minutes matter, Cabell Huntington Hospital's HealthNet Aeromedical Services helicopters based in Huntington, West Virginia, Portsmouth, Ohio and Prestonsburg, Kentucky are lifesavers. Specially trained flight teams are on-duty around the clock, ready to respond to emergencies throughout the region.

HealthNet was the first statewide hospital-based air medical service in the United States. In fact, our operation serves as a model for cost effective, cooperative aeromedical services in a rural environment. Eight helicopters serve West Virginia and significant portions of Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. Each helicopter base is responsible for providing service in a 150-nautical-mile radius (a nautical mile is 1.1508 miles). The strategic locations of the bases improve HealthNet's operational capabilities by reducing response time to emergencies.

The Helicopters

The helicopters, three Eurocopter EC135s in Charleston, Morgantown and Buckhannon, West Virginia and five Eurocopter A-Star B2s at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Portsmouth, Ohio, Prestonsburg, Kentucky, Bluefield, West Virginia, and a system-wide spare aircraft, are jet-powered and cruise at more than 130 mph. Each is equipped with a full array of aviation and medical equipment. Agencies utilizing HealthNet have grown to rely on our aircraft and expert flight teams to respond to their call and make a difference in the lives of their patients.
