monitored exerciseCabell Huntington Hospital's pulmonary rehabilitation program is nationally certified through the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Pulmonary rehabilitation is a well-established therapeutic tool that improves the quality of life and functional capacity of patients with chronic lung disease. Used in conjunction with standard medical therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation can alleviate symptoms and help restore and maintain your physical and psychological functioning. Pulmonary rehabilitation is usually recommended for patients with:

  • COPD
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic lung conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis
  • Stable chronic respiratory disease and severe shortness of breath on exertion
  • Pulmonary hypertension

For patients with chronic lung disease, pulmonary rehabilitation can be a significant intervention that helps you gain some degree of control over your symptoms and regain independence in activities of daily living. Used in conjunction with standard medical therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation can alleviate symptoms and help restore and maintain your physical and psychological functioning. This program focuses on the individual needs of each patient by working to meet realistic individual objectives, with an overall goal of helping you achieve a maximum level of independent functioning. Pulmonary rehabilitation services include:monitored exercise

  • pulmonary disease education
  • oxygen therapy management
  • smoking cessation
  • medication education
  • stress management
  • diabetes education
  • nutrition education

  • family support

These activities help you increase your strength and endurance through exercise training, reduce the frequency and severity of your symptoms, become actively involved in your own health care, maintain independence and improve your physical, mental, emotional and social quality of life. At Cabell Huntington Hospital, pulmonary rehabilitation integrates multidisciplinary services including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, respiratory and occupational therapists, exercise psychologists and a registered dietitian. You will participate in a twelve-week program with exercise, diaphragmatic breathing and education three days a week. A physician referral is required.
