Supervision

Supervision is offered by Pastoral Education supervisors certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. of Decatur, Georgia. Interns and residents participate in individual and group supervision. Other healthcare professionals participate in the program in order to enrich the learner's experience in Introductory CPE and CPE programs.

Admission Criteria

Students will be admitted regardless of gender, age, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion or disability. Diversity in the composition of the groups will be sought. Preference will be given to residency candidates who have a theological degree, are ordained and who already have taken one unit of CPE training. The application process is initiated when the Director of CPE receives a completed application with an application fee of $50.

Program Dates

Summer Unit: Beginning the Tuesday after Memorial Day through the second week in August, this is a 40-hour-per-week study program in the hospital setting. This is a full-time, eleven-week program.

Extended Unit: From September to May, this 16-hour per week study program includes eight hours in the hospital setting and eight hours in the student's parish or clinical setting.

Residency Program: This is a study program covering a full year. A basic unit of CPE is required before acceptance into the residency program. Residents are placed in specialized clinical settings at Cabell Huntington Hospital. The year-long residency starts the last full week of August and goes through August of the following year. The stipend for the residency is competitive. This training is designed to prepare ministers for certification as professional chaplains.

Tuition

Tuition is $500 per unit for interns. There is no tuition for residents.

Remuneration

There are no stipends for extended and summer units. The hospital provides meals for these participants and may work with interns to find reasonable housing. Residents receive an educational stipend and access to employee medical benefits.

Accreditation

These pastoral education programs are nationally accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., 1549 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30033.
