Cabell Huntington Hospital meets the special needs of seriously ill children with its ten-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. One of only three in West Virginia, the unit is designed for young people from infancy to age 16 who need critical care services.
Two pediatric intensivists, pediatric subspecialists, nurses specially trained in pediatric/critical care and therapists stress family involvement with the treatment they provide. Special attention also is given to the emotional and developmental needs of these young patients. Around-the-clock visitation and special emotional support are available for families.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cabell Huntington Hospital also has four beds with step-down capabilities and a new state-of-the-art computer monitoring system. Pediatric intensivists Dr. Eduardo Pino and Dr. Mike Waldeck work closely with specialists in cardiology, rehabilitation, oncology and infectious diseases and with neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists to provide the best care possible for their patients.
Specialized PICU Transport Services
Cabell Huntington Hospital offered the first specialized pediatric transport services in West Virginia, and the team transports an average of 370 critically ill or injured infants and children each year. Because life-saving skills for children are different from life-saving skills for adults, all transport team members are specially trained in life-saving skills for pediatric patients. The transport team is directed by two pediatric intensivists Eduardo Pino, MD and J. Michael Waldeck, MD, who work in conjunction with pediatric specialists to provide the most appropriate care for your child during transport and after arrival.
