Cabell Huntington Hospital, in collaboration with Marshall University School of Medicine, has developed a comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and community outreach program. The program is tailored to address the unique needs of seniors in our community.

Generally speaking, seniors can be categorized into three health-related categories: the well elderly, the chronically ill elderly and the frail elderly. Our services include programs and initiatives to address the needs for each of these categories.

SeniorWise

For the well elderly,we offer a membership program called SeniorWise. This program, provided in partnership with Chase, includes preventive health screenings, educational programs on health care and finances and social events that enhance community. Additional health screenings and educational programs are periodically offered by Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Premier Services

For seniors with chronic illnesses and/or age-related conditions, we have many premier services such as the Falls and Balance Clinic, the Urinary Incontinence Clinic, the Pain Management Center, the Joint Replacement Program, the Diabetes Program, the Palliative Care Team and several interdisciplinary rehabilitation therapy programs.

The Hanshaw Geriatric Center, staffed by Marshall University School of Medicine geriatricians, provides assessment and treatment services for seniors with special concerns such as memory loss. It also provides primary care for well seniors and those who have multiple chronic and age-related conditions. Vulnerable or frail seniors are also ideal candidates for services provided by the Hanshaw Center.

Quality Initiatives and Dedicated Resources

When emergency care or hospitalization is required, Cabell Huntington Hospital has quality initiatives and dedicated resources to address the special needs of the senior patient. Teams of nurses and physicians are organized to continuously evaluate and improve how care is delivered to this special population and provide professional education regarding best practices for care of the elderly. A nineteen-member physician team, called the Physician Advisory Board, has established clinical protocols and senior-specific policies and procedures focused on the promotion and maintenance of cognitive and physical function. Nurses and nurse-assistants throughout the hospital are organized into Seniors Resource Teams. Resource Team members serve as key conduits of information regarding seniors program initiatives and advocate excellence of service in treating senior patients.

The Senior Services program is led by Director Joy Pelfrey. Medical leadership is provided by Dr. Charles McCormick and the Physician Advisory Board. Interdisciplinary support and expertise are provided by key hospital departments including pharmacy, rehabilitation services, dietary, home health and pastoral care. The goal of Senior Services is for Cabell Huntington Hospital to be the hospital of choice for seniors in our community, and this distinction will be earned by providing comprehensive and specialized care for the elderly.
