Because of the high volume of procedures performed by the Surgery Department and the number of trauma patients Cabell Huntington Hospital sees, the hospital maintains a six-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU) to care for patients who require intensive care following surgery or trauma.

The SICU is on the second floor near the Surgery Department. This location is convenient for patients because they do not have to leave the floor, and they are near the surgery suite in case of emergency. Once they have recovered from surgery and no longer need intensive care, they are then moved to the medical/surgical unit.

The unit is staffed with registered nurses and patient care assistants and is outfitted with the latest patient monitoring system from Phillips and the Continuous Cardiac Output Monitor from Edwards Life Science. The output monitor provides a continuous reading of how well a patient?s heart is performing.

Each room is spacious enough to provide more comfort for family members who are visiting, as well as accommodate the sophisticated equipment needed to care for patients. In addition, there is a camera in each room to allow the staff to easily monitor the patients from the nurses' station. The cameras are added asset for patient safety and help with patients who unconsciously struggle with their ventilator tubes.

"Cabell Huntington Hospital has long been a safety net hospital for the Tri-State and we continue to see patients who are sicker and who need more intensive care," said Brent Marsteller, president and CEO. "This unit augments the 16 beds we have in our Intensive Care Unit, allowing us to better meet the needs of our patients."
