According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, an estimated 34.3 percent of U.S. adults 20 years and older are obese and 5.9 percent are extremely obese. With obesity comes a higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, digestive diseases, orthopedic disorders and an increased risk of death from some cancers. If you are overweight, losing as little as 5 percent of your body weight may lower your risk for several diseases, including coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and losing a greater percentage of percent of your body weight increases has an even more positive effect on these conditions.
