At Cabell Huntington Hospital, our goal is to be the hospital of choice for seniors, and we have been working hard to provide the quality of care you deserve. Our commitment to excellence in the care of older patients is evident in the foundation we have been building since 2003, including a wide variety of programs to benefit seniors.
The Senior Services Department was established to ensure that the Cabell Huntington Hospital staff is always providing the most appropriate care for senior patients. Senior Services' mission reaches beyond our campus and into the community, with a goal to share current health information and opportunities for screenings and education with seniors. The department serves as a primary referral center for seniors across the community. In addition to hosting the annual SeniorFest at Cabell Huntington Hospital, the Senior Services staff has built strong relationships with organizations and residential facilities for seniors throughout the Tri-State— attending meetings, speaking at events and hosting health fairs to share their message.
The department includes Clinical Manager/Senior Fracture Program Coordinator Becky Edwards, RN, BSN, CNRN; and Administrative Secretary/SeniorWise Coordinator Alisha Adkins.
Senior Fracture Program Coordinator Becky Edwards joined the Cabell Huntington Hospital staff in 1990. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the Ohio State University School of Nursing and worked on the Neuroscience Unit for 21 years as both a staff nurse and Clinical Coordinator before joining the Senior Services team. She is highly focused on quality of care improvements, and she enjoys caring for the senior population. Becky also serves as the Coordinator for the Senior Fracture Program. She was instrumental in the development of the program which is designated as a center of excellence and earned Joint Commission Disease-specific Certification in Hip Fracture Care.
Alisha Adkins, AAC, Administrative Secretary has been a Cabell Huntington Hospital employee since 1993. She was an Administrative Secretary for the Pastoral Care Department prior to joining the Senior Services staff in 2004. She graduated from Marshall Community College with an associate degree in applied science with a focus on secretarial studies and has earned certification as a professional administrative assistant.
Cabell Huntington Hospital is the only West Virginia hospital to earn designation as a Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) site. We have maintained NICHE certification since 2006 by continuously training the bedside staff in best practices for older hospitalized adults, providing knowledge and expertise about geriatric care to the entire hospital staff and implementing system-wide improvements in the care of older adult patients. As the only national geriatric initiative to improve the care of older hospitalized adults, NICHE provides resources and benchmarks that help us build and sustain high-quality geriatric patient care throughout the hospital.
Through our affiliation with NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders), Cabell Huntington offers nurses special training to prepare for and earn Geriatric Resource Nurse certification. The Geriatric Resource Nurse Program serves as the foundation for improving the geriatric knowledge and expertise of the bedside nurse and implementing system-wide improvement in the care of older adult patients.
The department is not just increasing the focus on the care of seniors but is developing a new model of care for senior patients. The use of evidence-based care in hospitalized elders will target key older adult health issues and promote a better quality of life.
Cabell Huntington Hospital offers a free membership program called SeniorWise. This program is designed for people over 50 and includes preventive health screenings, educational programs on health issues, health screenings for conditions affecting seniors, as well as a free exercise program and social activities and events that build friendships and community.
