Marshall Health Network - Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) Back and Spine Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Care Certification in Spine Surgery by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
The Back and Spine Center first earned this certification in 2023.
“The Cabell Huntington Hospital Back and Spine Center provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to back and spine care, which gives patients access to a wide range of specialists in back and spine disorders," said Hoyt Burdick, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Marshall Health Network. “Our team’s effective integration of evidence-based clinical practices and our organized approach to performance measurement and improvement earned this recertification. Our staff has worked hard to ensure we’ve met the high-quality standards set forth by The Joint Commission.”
The certification recognizes health care organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for spine surgery. The certification evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge.
The CHH Back and Spine Center underwent a rigorous review. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards including surgical site infection rates, new neurological deficits, unplanned return visits and pre- and post-operative patient reported outcomes. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewer also considered chart reviews and staff and patient interviews.
“Disease-Specific Care Certification in Spine Surgery recognizes health care organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer for The Joint Commission. “We commend Cabell Huntington Hospital for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”
