Whether you are recovering from illness or injury or coping with a long-term health condition or disease, you may benefit from the life-changing treatment offered by the Rehabilitation Services Department. Patients from infancy though adulthood may receive services while in the hospital or as an outpatient in one of our many facilities. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy use a variety of tools and techniques to help you regain or maintain your optimal level of strength and functioning. Physical Therapy
Physical therapy works with individuals following an injury, birth defect or a developmental delay. Patients are evaluated and an individual treatment program is developed for your specific needs. Our outpatient Physical Therapy staff includes certified orthopedic therapists, and specialists in: balance, BIG, sports medicine and sports performance, pain and pool therapy. Outpatient physical therapy is available in five locations:
- SMART (Specialists in Movement and Rehab Therapies) Center
- Marshall University Sports Medicine Institute
- Proctorville Family Medical Center
- Outpatient Pediatric Rehab Center
- YMCA Pool
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy involves the evaluation and treatment of articulation, language, voice, fluency, feeding and swallowing disorders for patients from infants to the elderly. Our outpatient Speech Therapy staff includes specialists in: Dysphagia/swallowing, Voice, Speech/Language Development, Aphasia, Dysarthria, pediatrics & adults. Speech Therapy is available in two locations:
- Cabell Huntington Hospital – Rehab, 4th floor
- Outpatient Pediatric Rehab Center
Patients with Parkinson’s Disease, post stroke and other neurological diseases often have difficulty:
- Speaking
- Understanding speech/language
- Making voice loud enough to be heard
- Chewing and swallowing
- With cognition (memory, planning, sequencing events)
The speech therapist is certified in LSVT, LOUD, VitalStim, and is experienced in performing Modified Barium Swallows.
The Speech Therapy for Adults Program offers evaluation and treatment in the following areas:
- Speech and Language Disorders
- Aphasia
- Apraxia of speech
- Dysarthria
- Dysphagia
- Voice

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy helps you achieve or improve your independent living skills after illness or injury or in coping with a chronic condition. Our outpatient occupational therapy staff includes specialists in functional capacity evaluations, hand and upper extremity injuries & splint fabrication, lymphedema therapy and Herdman Vestibular Balance System and functional capacity evaluations. Occupational therapy is available in three locations:
