Lymphedema Therapy
When the body’s lymphatic system is unable to adequately drain liquid from the body, tissues fill with fluid. This causes significant swelling and pain, with an increased risk of developing infection. Lymphedema Therapy restores function, reduces physical and psychologic suffering, and prevents the development of infection. Early and consistent treatment is very important to assist the body to rid itself of the excess fluid.
People at risk for developing Lymphedma are patients with:
- Breast cancer
- Lymphoma
- Sarcoma
- Melanoma
- Prostate cancer
- Peripheral Vascular Disease
Treatment by our Occupational Therapists focuses on improving lymphedema with manual lymphatic drainage, massage and exercise. It can also include use of compression stockings and/or multilayer bandaging. The patients are educated on hygiene of the treated area as well as instructed in exercises and leg and arm elevation.
Lymphedema Therapy is located on the 4th floor of Cabell Huntington Hospital. A physician referral is required prior to scheduling the first appointment. For more information call 304.399.1503.
