Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

At Cabell Huntington Hospital, a therapist with specialized, advanced training in pelvic floor rehabilitation will work closely with you to create a program specifically designed to address your symptoms and personal needs.

You're Not Alone

Do you ever experience a loss of urine when you cough, sneeze or exercise? Do you ever have painful intercourse or pelvic pain? Are you pregnant and experiencing urinary urgency or frequency? More than 20 million women suffer from the consequences of weakened pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to incontinence, prolapse or pelvic floor pain. These are common issues that are treatable and can be helped through pelvic floor rehabilitation.

What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is the part of your body that’s made up of muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs? the bladder, vagina, uterus and rectum. Pelvic floor muscle weakness can lead to incontinence and pelvic prolapse. Problems can become more common with advancing age, but in people of all ages, the pelvic floor can be weakened or become painful due to:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Obesity
  • Surgery
  • Heavy lifting
  • Herniated discs in the lower back
  • Medications

What is Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is evidence-supported, non-invasive therapy that focuses on the muscles of the pelvic floor. The rehab process uses pelvic muscle exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, optimal posture review, core muscle strengthening and biofeedback techniques to retrain and strengthen these muscles so that they are better able to support the pelvic organs and control function. Increased muscle support makes it easier for you to manage conditions like urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse and pelvic pain. Services include:

  • Evaluation
  • Pelvic floor education
  • Manual therapy
  • Activities of daily living assessment
  • Biofeedback training
  • Neuromuscular rehabilitation
  • Individualized home program

A therapist with specialized, advanced training in pelvic floor rehabilitation works closely with you to create a program specifically designed to address your symptoms and personal needs. The goal of the program is to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles to better support your bladder and other organs. This will help relieve your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Care is provided in an atmosphere that allows you to feel comfortable talking about health issues.
