Marshall Health Network, Cabell and Wayne Schools announce 2026 class of MedEx program
Monday, April 27, 2026
Students, their family members, and education leaders from Cabell and Wayne county schools joined Marshall Health Network (MHN) Monday, April 27, to announce the 2026 class selection of the region’s Medical Explorers, or MedEx, program.
The MedEx program is a two-year education and health care program that introduces Cabell and Wayne county high school students to Marshall Health Network, giving them first-hand, on-the-job experience in health care careers. This MHN program, which is a partnership with both school systems, the Education Alliance and the West Virginia Department of Education, also serves as a direct pathway to a possible health care career after graduation.
“Introducing students to careers in health care is an important investment in our future,” said Scott Raynes, president and CEO of MHN. “The MedEx program provides hands-on experience and meaningful insight into a range of health care roles at Marshall Health Network, helping students build a strong foundation while inspiring the next generation of compassionate, skilled professionals.”
During a ceremony at the Marshall Health Network - St. Mary Medical Center Highlawn Center, students participated in a “pinning ceremony” to show their commitment to the program and were recognized in front of friends and family members with certificates and MedEx badges.
"We are pleased to work with our partners to open pathways for students across the state," said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. "Programs such as these increase student success because they combine real-world experience with classroom learning. Students can cast a vision for their future while gaining a range of skills necessary to successfully pursue their journey. The MedEx program is what industry and education working together looks like, and our students will reap the benefits of this partnership for years to come."
“Thanks to this thoughtful and innovative partnership with Marshall Health Network and The Education Alliance, our students are gaining access to meaningful, real-world learning experiences unlike ever before,” said Cabell County Schools Superintendent Tim Hardesty. “Through hands-on, career-focused training, students gain the skills and experience to step confidently into high-demand roles within our community after graduation. This opportunity empowers students to begin their journeys in the health care field, learning directly from skilled professionals while continuing to receive the guidance and support of our dedicated school staff as they grow and explore their bright futures.”
“The MedEx program represents exactly the kind of opportunity we want for our students, one that connects classroom learning with real-world experience and opens doors to meaningful careers right here at home,” said Wayne County Schools Superintendent Todd Alexander. “By partnering with Marshall Health Network, the Education Alliance, and the West Virginia Department of Education, we are giving students early exposure to health care pathways while building a stronger workforce for our community’s future.”
“The future is bright in our state and there are so many health care career opportunities. Today’s Signing Day spotlights how the MedEx program enables Cabell and Wayne County students to develop the professional and technical skills they need to be successful,” said Dr. Amelia Courts, President and CEO of The Education Alliance. “We are grateful to Marshall Health Network, Cabell and Wayne County Schools, and the West Virginia Department of Education for their commitment to equipping our students for a bright future.”
The 2026 MedEx cohort of students’ journey begins next school year. Students will participate in classroom health science learning at the school and at Marshall Health Network’s Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center, working alongside Marshall Health Network employees. The program is entering its third year of success in expanding student access to quality health care careers in the region.
