Surgeons at Marshall Health Network-Cabell Huntington Hospital have performed West Virginia's first robotic Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S), expanding treatment options for patients with severe obesity and complex metabolic disease.
The procedure was successfully completed July 2 by Semeret T. Munie, MD, FACS, FASMBS, a fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon at Marshall Health Network and division chief of bariatric surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.
SADI-S is an advanced bariatric procedure that offers another surgical option for patients with severe obesity, particularly those with very high body mass index (BMI), difficult-to-control diabetes and other metabolic conditions.
"Introducing SADI-S has been a goal of our program," Munie said. "The procedure allows us to better serve patients with more advanced obesity and severe metabolic disease who may benefit from a different surgical approach. Being able to offer this advanced procedure here in West Virginia means patients can receive highly specialized care close to home."
SADI-S may be an option for patients with a body mass index of 50 or greater, severe metabolic disease, including difficult-to-control diabetes, or inadequate weight loss or significant weight regain after a previous sleeve gastrectomy.
Obesity is a chronic disease, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution," Munie said. "Adding SADI-S allows us to offer another evidence-based treatment option so we can better meet the needs of each patient."
The Center for Surgical Weight Control at Cabell Huntington Hospital provides comprehensive surgical weight-loss care through a multidisciplinary team of bariatric surgeons, advanced practice providers, registered dietitians, nurses and support staff. The addition of SADI-S expands the program's ability to provide personalized treatment options for patients with severe obesity and obesity-related conditions.
